Illegal connections in Thaba Chweu clamped down in surprise operations

A taskforce of several law enforcement agencies moved in to remove illegal connections, as these prove dangerous and possibly lethal.

On Friday September 16, the community of Mashishing within the greater Lydenburg area was caught by surprise when many of their illegal connections were disconnected.

In a previous statement, Thaba Chweu Local Municipality said these illegal connections are usually made by unqualified electricians, and do not have the required electrical protection. Wires run on makeshift poles while others lie exposed, endangering unsuspecting residents.

Several private security firms, the Lydenburg Traffic Department, Thaba Chweu officials, and other organisations were part of the clampdown operation.

Thaba Chweu Local Municipality said it would release a statement after the operation. It is still busy with the removal.
