While matters are still tense on the South Africa/Mozambique border, the Lebombo Border Post remains safe and open to traffic from both sides of the border.
It has been a crunch point all week in the build-up to the announcement of Mozambique’s hotly disputed national election results, which saw Frelimo’s Daniel Chapo emerge victorious with 70.67% of the votes.
It has, on a number of occasions, been closed this week due to unrest on the Mozambican side of the border.

However, as of this morning (Friday, October 25), the border is deemed to be safe with thoroughfare open to travellers from both sides.
Authorities are, however, still watchful of the situation. Travellers who have used the border today have offered reports on social media that they crossed the border safely.

The border is also open to truck traffic, and not just the general public.
The Mpumalanga spokesperson for community safety, security and liaison, Moeti Mmusi, confirmed additional man power was deployed to the border to assist in monitoring and maintaining the situation for the duration of the unrest in Mozambique, clarifying that the deployment will return to normal thereafter.
