One seriously injured in N4 incident after solitary death on N4 over festive weekend

There were a total of 20 accidents on the N4 in the Lowveld on the weekend.

There was one death recorded on the N4 in the Lowveld on the weekend of December 21 and 22, and one pedestrian was seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle on Christmas Eve.

The high volume of traffic expected on the N4 on Christmas Eve came to fruition. A person was seriously injured between Poplar Creek and the Montrose interchange at about 11:30 when they were hit by a light duty vehicle (LDV) while trying to cross the N4. According to Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, the person was transported to hospital and treated for injuries.

In another accident on the N4 on Christmas Eve, three people were injured when an LDV and a small truck collided just before 16:00 between the Sudwala and the Schagen intersections. A stop-and-go was put in place to manage the traffic flow, and the scene was cleared at 18:00.

The weekend prior to Christmas Eve yielded 20 accidents on the N4 in the Lowveld, eight were recorded in the Highveld, and according to TRAC N4, a further five in Mozambique. The accidents in Mozambique led to three deaths, while there was one death in the Lowveld.

The death occurred between Jeppe’s Reef and the Impala Station, between Malalane and Hectorspruit. This accident occurred in the early hours of the morning at about 03:00, and was a head-on collision between a truck and an LDV.

According to TRAC N4 predictions, the heaviest traffic days have passed already, while it anticipates heavier than normal traffic on December 29, as well as January 3 and 5.
