Southern Sphere Platinum invests in Steelpoort high school learners

Southern Sphere Platinum is partnering with Steelpoort schools and communities by providing science kits and training programmes to support education and skills development.

Following the recent transfer of a mining right to Southern Sphere Platinum, the company has been engaging with communities in the Steelpoort area to build meaningful relationships as it develops its project in the region.

On May 6, the company handed over science kits to learners at Seokgome Secondary School and Kgahlanong Secondary School, marking the first phase of an ongoing education and skills development programme that will expand to other schools and communities.

The initiative aims to make science more accessible and engaging, while highlighting the real-world importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). By supporting practical learning, the programme seeks to spark curiosity, build confidence and open pathways to future opportunities in a way that no textbook can match.

“As we develop, we want the community to develop with us,” said Kgoputso Segokodi, community liaison officer at Southern Sphere Platinum. “A mine cannot grow in isolation from the people whose home it shares. Education is at the heart of sustainable community development. Practical tools such as these science kits help learners bring classroom concepts to life by connecting them to real world applications.”

Segokodi added that hands-on learning can inspire confidence and ambition in learners.

“When a child builds something with their own hands and watches it work, something shifts inside them. They begin to believe they can shape the world. That belief opens doors in any field a learner chooses to pursue, and we are proud to play a small part in that journey.”

The principal of Seokgome Secondary School, Sebilone Makgopa, welcomed the initiative, saying the kits would support practical learning and help improve results.

Kgahlanong Secondary School’s principal, Ruphus Shabangu, added: “The science kits motivate our learners to excel in their studies. This will enable them to go on to university and pursue careers in engineering and scientific fields, contributing to a vibrant economy. We are grateful for the donations and value this partnership with Southern Sphere Platinum.”

Learners and teachers responded enthusiastically during the handovers, underscoring the value of interactive learning tools and the benefits of collaboration between industry, schools and communities.

Beyond school support, the mine has also provided accredited training to community members, including home-based care training for young people – 14 of whom are women – as well as training in the operation of heavy machinery.

Further engagements and programmes are planned as part of the company’s commitment to building lasting relationships with the community.
