Two dead, two injured on the N4

The driver of a tanker truck died in a head-on collision with another truck late on Sunday evening on the N4 at the Ngodwana weighbridge.

MBOMBELA – TRAC spokesman, Solange Soares-Nicholson said as a flat-bed truck was leaving the weighbridge it collided with the tanker heading towards Pretoria.

“The driver of the flat-bed was unharmed, but the driver of the tanker died on impact,” Soares-Nicholson confirmed.

Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesman, Mmusi Moeti said debris from the accident hit a traffic officer and the driver of a vehicle he had pulled over. “Both the traffic officer and the driver of the vehicle were taken to hospital where they are currently receiving medical attention for injuries sustained.”

The road was closed from 22:30 on Sunday to 03:00 on Monday.

TRAC also confirmed that a pedestrian had been involved in an accident on Sunday near the Burnside turn-off on the N4.

The female had stood in the middle of the road when a car, heading west from Mbombela to Pretoria, narrowly missed her.

“A second car hit her and she died upon impact,” Soares-Nicholson confirmed.

Moeti also confirmed the accident, stating another pedestrian had been hit at Alkmaar on Sunday.

“Fortunately that person was not harmed,” he said.
