Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court has gang rape suspect in custody
The police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, said the suspect is a Mozambican national who could further be charged for contravention of the Immigration Act.
The Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court remanded a 20-year-old suspect in custody yesterday, January 7, on charges of rape.
This follows his arrest the day before, in connection with a gang rape case that was opened on January 3.
Six other suspects are still at large.
According to a police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the victim indicated that the incident had occurred at a certain salon in Bambamatches in Bushbuckridge.
“She said the salon owner went to fetch some food from his nearby residence, and she was left alone in the salon. During that time, about seven males are said to have stormed into the premises. One of them is said to be known to the victim,” Ndubane said.
Police investigations led to the arrest of the suspect who is an employee at the salon.
“She alleges that the men dragged her into a room adjacent to the salon, where they took turns raping her throughout the night. She said she was rescued the following day by a Good Samaritan who opened the door for her. By then, the suspects had fled the scene.”
