Holiday packages top Christmas gifts

If budget constraints are forcing you to stay home this Christmas, you can always consider taking a sho't left and exploring the many beauties the Lowveld has to offer.

MBOMBELA – Christmas has become synonymous with travel, and holiday packages are replacing traditional gift as people’s favourite.

However, the economy is tight and Lowvelder has decided to ask readers on its Facebook page if their holiday plans include travelling to an exotic destination.

Gerrit van Wyk says he will be in and out of the Lowveld for the duration of the season. “I thought that having the best of both will satisfy all the family, we are scattered between going on holiday and staying at the house and inviting my family and my wife’s (sic),” he said.

For Kgagile Ndlovu it’s a different story. She will spend the festive season with her eight-month-old son and husband. “This year I will not go on holiday, I will celebrate the festive season with my newborn son. It’s his first Christmas with us and we decided to make memories here at home,” Ndlovu says.

Sam Dos Santos says he’s got a special gift for his family this Christmas. This year he is going to spoil them with a holiday package to Mozambique.

“We are going to visit our country of origin. We will do some sightseeing and enjoy the beautiful atmosphere of the country,” he says. Dos Santos adds that the festive season is the best time to give his family this gift.

Some prefer having a bit of both. “The second week of December I will dedicate to a church youth camp and in the third week I will go on holiday,” says Fanie Meyer. Although Meyer hasn’t decided where to go, he is sure that wherever it is his family will have fun.

If budget constraints are forcing you to stay home this Christmas, you can always consider taking a sho’t left and exploring the many beauties the Lowveld has to offer.

You can visit the Blyde River Canyon, the world’s largest green canyon; see the Big 5 in the Kruger National Park; tour through the Sudwala Caves which are regarded as the oldest in the world; undertake fly-fishing in Dullstroom; visit Pilgrim’s Rest or partake in outdoor activities in the Hazyview.
