How to get the perfect herb garden with Tanya Visser

Gardening guru, Tanya Visser, gave visitors to newly revamped Montana Pavilion tips on how to get the best out of their gardens

MBOMBELA – Gardening guru Tanya Visser treated local enthusiasts to a workshop on how to get the best out of their herb gardens.
The presenter of the Home Channel’s popular television show, The Gardener, shared her expertise at Montana Garden Pavilion on Women’s Day.

Seasoned and new gardeners gathered at the revamped nursery to learn the dos and don’ts of working with herbs.

They were also given a few seedlings to get started or expand their herb gardens.

Not everyone can get it right the first or second time – the planting of the herbs, that is, Visser explained.

“It is always about learning and every day I am learning because I don’t know everything,” she said.
She grew up in a family with green fingers in Umzinto in KwaZulu-Natal.

Visser said gardening enthusiasts often want their herbs to look perfect and neat. “Most are not meant to look neat and will grow anywhere if you do it properly,” she added.

Visser’s tips for starting your vegetable garden are:

  1. Start small.
  2. Buy little seedlings.
  3. Grow the things that you will eat.
  4. Ensure that your plants get, at least, five hours of sunlight.
  5. Prepare your soil with compost, bio-ocean and bone-meal fertilisers.
