Road repairs appreciated but too little too late

Despite the department's claim that it has taken measures in March and June to maintain sections of the road, the latest of many complaints were received towards the end of June.

Residents living on the Brondal Road (D1749) in the White River area are at their wits’ end due to the bad condition of the road.

This is a very busy road carrying heavy traffic on a daily basis, including timber trucks turning onto it from the Lydenburg Road.

Especially bad is the stretch from Heidel Eggs to White River, according to one complainant. “Potholes cover both sides of the road and many a vehicle has lost a tyre here,” she told White River Post.

According to her she has emailed several complaints to various members of the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport, but has received no response.

On enquiry, a spokesman from the department said they were aware of the unsatisfactory condition of some sections of the road, but gave little good news for residents who have to negotiate the road every day.

Despite his claim that the department has taken measures in March and June this year to maintain sections which are in a poor condition, White River Post received the latest of many complaints towards the end of June.

According to the statement by David Nkambule, those interventions have included pavement repairs and pothole patching, edge-break repair and slurry seal application.

He admitted that the ideal intervention would include rehabilitation and reconstruction, but said that may not take place in the current financial year due to budget limitations.

Residents are now waiting anxiously to see whether the department will continue to carry out routine maintenance on the road, as promised by Nkambule.
