Owner of spaza shop near school arrested for dealing in drugs

During a patrol on Monday, KaMhlushwa police searched a spaza shop near a school and found heroin and crack cocaine.

KAMHLUSHWA – A 39-year-old man appeared in the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court after he was arrested at his spaza shop for dealing in drugs on Monday.

Officers from KaMhlushwa SAPS were patrolling the area as part of their visible policing tasks and decided to search a spaza shop next to Sidlamafa Secondary School.

After receiving the owner’s permission to search him, the officers found 18 tiles of heroin and three full moons of crack cocaine.

According to Const. Zithulele Mhlongo of KaMhlushwa SAPS, the man told officers that he “usually stocked those drugs from Nelspruit”.

The accused was granted bail of R3 000 and is scheduled to appear in court again on February 1.

Parents are warned to keep a close eye on people hanging around schools as drug dealers are increasingly targeting children by operating near schools. Children are not just targeted as buyers but some can even be groomed to sell drugs to their peers.
