Selected KNP rhinos dehorned to deter poachers
Several rhinos in the Greater Kruger Protected Area are being dehorned as part of SANParks' anti-poaching interventions, the Kruger National Park (KNP) announced in a press release last Friday.
SKUKUZA – According to the KNP’s general manager of communications and marketing, Isaac Phaahla, SANParks and its conservation partners in the Greater Kruger Region are working together on several initiatives to minimise the effects of rhino poaching on population numbers.
Measures of their integrated wildlife management approach include the selective dehorning of rhino cows in the southern part of the KNP, strengthening security measures, sharing information on incursions and intelligence on criminal activities, and collaboration with law enforcement.

Phaahla wrote that the National Prosecuting Authority “is being briefed extensively on the current situation in order to deliver stiff sentences to those found in possession of ammunition, high calibre rifles and trespassing in a protected area with the intention to commit a crime”.

The loss of a rhino cow is especially dire for population numbers as it not only results in the loss of a dependent calf but also the possibility of more calves being born.
Authorities hope for higher sentences, especially in cases where rhino calves were left destitute due to poaching.
