Fire warning issued for Mpumalanga on Saturday

The South African Weather Service said conditions would be extremely favourable for the possibility of veld fires.

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over Mpumalanga, the North West, Gauteng, Limpopo and the eastern Free State on Saturday October 16.

Kumsa Masizana, a forecaster of the South African Weather Service (SAWS), said hot to extremely hot conditions are expected in Mpumalanga.

“It is expected to be hot, dry and windy, which are all favourable for the possibility of veld fires,” said Masizana.

The warning for the possibility of veld fires was issued for October 16 between 10:00 and 18:00.

According to the SAWS, heat wave conditions are expected in Mpumalanga, with extremely hot conditions in especially the Lowveld. A maximum temperature of 34 degrees Celsius is expected in Mbombela, 33 degrees Celsius in Barberton, 32 degrees Celsius in Sabie, Graskop and the Blyde River Canyon, 40 degrees Celsius in Komatipoort and 41 degrees Celsius in Skukuza.

On Sunday October 17, temperatures are expected to drop significantly, with a 30% chance of thunderstorms over the Lowveld. Temperatures will range between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius.
