Robbers hit cash-in-transit van in Shabalala outside Hazyview

A gang of robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of cash after bombing a cash-in-transit vehicle. One suspect has been arrested in connection with the heist.

A cash-in-transit van was bombed by a group of unknown men on the R536 in Shabalala outside Hazyview, just before the turn-off to Phabeni Gate, today, May 5.

According to some eyewitnesses, a white SUV shot at the van several times until it came to a halt.

“A number of different cars appeared and surrounded the van. The security guards inside the vehicle were instructed to get out before it was blown open. The suspects stole an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene in their cars in different directions,” said the bystanders.After community members looted the remaining cash on the scene, they were chased away by the police. No fatalities or injuries were reported; however, the SAPS is currently on the scene.

One suspect has been arrested, and a stolen car that was used in the heist has been recovered.The road between Hazyview and Phabeni Gate will be closed until 02:00 tomorrow. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes to avoid any delays.
