Lydenburg murder case postponed; additional charge added

One of the accused was reprimanded for requesting that court proceedings be delayed as he was waiting for his attorney to arrive at the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court.

The suspects accused of the murder of Megan Griesel (20) made their third court appearance in the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, January 16

The three accused, Mcolosi Makama (27), Sanele Magagula (27) and Godfrey Mashile (32) were arrested and are still detained for the alleged murder of Griesel last year.

She was killed on October 21 between 00:39 and 00:45 during a robbery at the traffic circle between the Lydenburg Convenience Engen Garage and the Quest Garage. Both garages are close to The Heads Shopping Centre Complex.

The robbers mistook the Toyota Hilux Griesel was driving for a security vehicle and started shooting at it. Twenty-seven bullet holes were fired into the Hilux during the incident.
The case of the three accused stood over to February 15.

During the court proceedings, a letter from the National Prosecuting Authority of Mpumalanga was presented. The letter requested that the case be postponed to the above-mentioned date for further investigation.
No bail application was made by any of the accused. One, however, requested the court proceedings be halted while he waited for his attorney to arrive.

The request was denied and he was reprimanded and reminded that he and his attorney are fully aware of the fact that court proceedings start at 09:00 every morning at Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court.
An additional charge of aggravated robbery was added to the existing charges against them.
All three suspects remain in police custody.
