Mr and Miss Komatipoort’s crowning a grand affair
The parents, teachers and learners of Komatipoort Akademie gathered for a night to crown the king and queen of the school.
It was an extravagant circus at the Komatipoort Akademie hall during the crowning of Mr and Miss Komatipoort on October 17.
The pageant’s theme was The Greatest Showman. The parents, teachers and learners came together to enjoy some great performances while voting for their favourites, who graciously strutted the catwalk.
The learners gave sterling performances in their attempts to wow the judges. By the end of the evening, Megan Lugar was crowned Miss Komatipoort and Rikus Nieuwenhuis, Mr Komatipoort. The pair looked like a dream as they paraded their sashes in the presence of the cheering learners and proud parents.

Among the judges was the school’s alumnus, Zhané Botha, who was crowned this year’s Mrs Mpumalanga in July. Botha said being a judge at the pageant felt special for her. “I graduated high school here, and coming back to be part of something so big feels really amazing for me. I love working with youngsters and coaching them. Unfortunately, I could not coach these ones, but spending tonight here was enjoyable for me. It’s beautiful to see them oozing courage, and I definitely believe there is big potential here,” she said.
The organiser, a teacher, Tarina Swart, said this was her first pageant since she joined the school in March, and she was happy to see it come alive in the manner it did. “It was so beautiful to see the kids look so stunning tonight. Planning this event was also an opportunity for me to get to know all of them and it was a great adventure. We have a lot of support at the school, which made it easier to pull off such an event,” said Swart.
She added that the next occasions will be an even bigger circus.
The night was also marked with beautiful performances from Excellent Nkosi, which ranged from a Michael Jackson tribute to a song dedicated to his teacher, Danilla Steyn, who recently lost her mother.
