UPDATE | German tourist Jörg Schnarr’s murderer convicted in Mpumalanga High Court

The case has been postponed to December 9 for mitigation and aggravation of sentence. 

The man convicted of killing German tourist Jörg Schnarr faces sentencing on December 9.

Napoleon Joseph Ngalungu was convicted of murder, attempted robbery, and possession of a firearm on Thursday, November 28 in the Mpumalanga High Court.

He appeared on Friday November 29 again and the case was postponed to December 9 for mitigation and aggravation of sentence.

This is in connection with an incident that the happened on October 3, 2022, when Schnarr and three other tourists were travelling in a minibus along the Numbi Road towards the Kruger National Park.

According to National Prosecuting Authority’s regional spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, as the tourists were driving, a VW Golf emerged and suddenly pulled up and blocked their way.

“The perpetrators fired shots at the tourists’ vehicle and Scharr was struck by a bullet and succumbed.”

“The police investigations led to the arrest of three suspects, Nyalungu, Marshall Cebo Mamba and Bongumusa Matsane. During trial the other two accused were discharged in terms in terms of Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Act. The court concluded that Nyalungu has a case to answer,” Nyuswa said.

She added, “The matter was before court and the defence requested time to consult with the accused . All parties agreed to postpone the matter to December 9 for mitigation and aggravation of sentence.”
