Premier to visit Sabie rescue mission of zama zama captives

The premier's office said the premier will weigh in on the matter as he is concerned about the risk of human life.

Premier Mandla Ndlovu will weigh in on the ongoing operation to extract zama zama captives from an illegal mine in Sabie.

Ndlovu and his entourage are scheduled to touch base today, Thursday, December 5, at 08:00.

This as a number of zama zamas were confirmed dead after a shoot-out, while about 10 have been taken into custody.

“The premier is concerned about the activities of illegal mining in the province and the inherent risks to human lives,” said the premier’s spokesperson, George Mthethwa.

He said the premier would monitor the area and engage members of the search and rescue operation, including the police and security personnel.

Mthethwa said it would be the second time that Ndlovu visited an illegal mine in the Thaba Chweu Local Municipality this year.

“In September he visited Pilgrim’s Rest, where a group of illegal miners were arrested,” said Mthethwa.
