Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court remands fraud accused in custody

The case was postponed to December 17 for bail application and legal representation.

A 34-year-old man was remanded in custody by the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court on Monday, December 9. He was caught with alleged counterfeit goods worth R3.5m.

Willy Mxolise Mhlongo was arrested and charged with fraud and contravening the Customs and Excise Act and the Counterfeit Goods Act.

The case was postponed to December 17 for bail application and legal representation.

According to the Hawks’ spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Dineo Sekgotodi, on Monday information was received and operationalised regarding a suspect who was transporting counterfeit goods from Naas in Nkomazi to Gauteng.

“The driver of a Toyota Quantum was stopped and searched on the N4 tollgate road near the Jeppe’s Reef turn-off, in Komatipoort. During the search, counterfeit goods (sneakers) valued at R3.5m were found.

“These included 407 pairs of fake Nike sneakers, 559 pairs of fake All-Star sneakers, 80 pairs of fake Reebok sneakers, 244 pairs of fake New Balance sneakers, 92 pairs of fake Converse sneakers, and 354 pairs of fake Jordan sneakers,” Sekgotodi said.

She added that the driver was arrested, charged and appeared in the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court on the same day. He was remanded in custody.

The counterfeit goods and the vehicle were confiscated. The case was postponed to December 17 for bail application and legal representation.
