Accident claims one life on the N4 near Valencia intersection link

A truck crashed through the bridge rails and fell into a ravine.

A driver of an articulated truck died on the N4 between the R38 intersection and the Valencia link earlier today, December 12.

According to Martin Jeffrey of Emer-G-Med, they received a call from a community member on the KaMagugu road at about 06:10.

“We responded to the call and upon our arrival we found that an articulated truck had crashed through the bridge rails and fallen into the ravine. We did not access the truck. We are waiting for the relevant emergency personnel, including Sarza, to assist in reaching the vehicle. However, by the look of things, we suspect that he might have succumbed to injuries, but we still need to access the vehicle to confirm that,” said Jeffrey.

The spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, Moeti Mmusi, confirmed that the driver had passed away due to the impact and/or resulting injuries. It was also reported that the driver was alone in the truck when the accident happened.

“The cause of the accident is unknown at this stage, however, our preliminary investigation suggests he might have fallen asleep while driving. Further investigation is under way to determine the cause of the accident. The road is currently operating on a stop-and-go basis. Motorists are advised to drive with caution when approaching the area,” he said.

Mmusi also said emergency personnel are at the scene and the recovery is under way.
