Christmas comes early once again for Oranjezicht

The Christmas lunch and gift handover have become an annual tradition for the residents.

The residents of Oranjezicht were once again treated to a special Christmas lunch and party by a group of caring locals who have carried out this tradition for the past five years.

The party was held at the MOTH Legogotu Shellhole Hall on Saturday, December 7, and some 60 residents of Oranjezicht benefitted from the occasion. They were treated by a group of Mbombelans who had started the tradition in 2020 as a means to lend them a helping hand.

The residents received a hearty Christmas lunch as well as a gift that included a variety of items they might need on a daily basis. Vouchers were also scattered around among the gift bags, and the recipients receive these per the luck of the draw, as they got to pick out a random bag when their number was called to the front to collect their gift.

Carlene van der Westhuizen and her parents, Kobus and Karen Badenhorst, who started the initiative.

The initiative was started by Kobus and Karen Badenhorst and has grown to include 20 of their friends and family members. “The people of Oranjezicht don’t always have a lot, so we started this with the aim of spreading some Christmas spirit wherever possible,” Kobus said.

A vast array of sponsors donate to the cause every year, and this year, TRACN4 and SPAR Lowveld were two of the main sponsors. Some people also donated stays at their homes in Marloth Park as getaway opportunities for the Oranjezicht residents to win. The Steelwings Motorcycle Club also lent a hand this year, raising thousands of rands to go towards assisting the Oranjezicht residents.

The day was once again a great success and fun was had by all, with the spirit of Christmas prevailing above all else.
