Laerskool Ohrigstad hosts netball and rugby games for future stars

More than 500 pupils participated in both cricket and rugby sports

The sports fields of Laerskool Ohrigstad were a hive of activity on Saturday when aspiring young netball and rugby players gathered to learn more about these two popular sports.

It was the first time some of them had officially engaged in a competitive match. Parents and educators were there to offer a hug after any hard knocks.

“Not even the cold weather was a deterrent to the kids. The crowd was amazing. We had more than 500 pupils competing in the two sports,” said Elizma Steyn, an educator at Laerskool Ohrigstad.

Seven schools participated in the netball and rugby games.

Steyn said the sports day served to give players the necessary exposure to matches.

“It also promoted good sportsmanship and cultivated a love of netball and rugby among the children.”
Seven schools participated in the games, including the host, Laerskool Steelpoort, Laerskool Burgersfort, Laerskool Lydenburg, Lydenburg Primary, River Valley Primary and Laerskool Graskop.

“It was a wonderful day and it was nice that the children were not playing for trophies, but simply to enjoy the sports.”
