Hey parents, here’s how long the winter school holidays are

The winter holidays are essentially used to conduct extra classes for Grade 12 pupils.

The mid-year examinations are nearing their end, and the schools will officially close for the winter holidays on Friday, June 27. They are set to reopen for the third term on Tuesday, July 22.

This means your primary or high school child will be at home for three weeks.

However, some schools, such as independent schools, may prefer pupils to stay at home as soon as they finish writing exams, which could be earlier than June 27.

During the school holidays, some schools may offer extra classes for learners in preparation for the Grade 12 trial exams to take place in the third term.

The Mpumalanga Department of Education (DoE) will yet again administer the Winter Vacation Classes for 23 034 pupils from the underperforming schools from June 30 to July 18.

These are schools that obtained below the 80% pass rate in the 2024 National Senior Certificate Examination.

These classes will take place in 107 established centres across the province, 15 of which will be residential centres.

The department said it will provide meals and scholar transport to deserving learners to ensure easy access to the classes.

These classes are intended to expose learners to the teaching methodologies of the most skilled and knowledgeable teachers and will help to cover the lost ground.

In addition, the DoE will collaborate with the South African Institute for Charted Accountants to conduct residential camps for selected talented learners.

These camps will run for a five-day period and will focus on mathematics, technical maths, physical science, technical physical science and accounting.
