Roadblock clampdown on unlicenced taxis continues in Fetakgomo Tubatse

Maila warned that anyone illegally blocking roads will be held accountable.

The taxi battles that shut down Burgersfort on September 11 did not deter the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM).

On September 12, the FTLM’s mayor, Eddie Maila, continued to lead traffic roadblocks in Burgersfort to ascertain whether public transport vehicles comply with the Road Traffic Management Act regarding operating licenses.

The roadblocks were conducted at the two main entrances to town, on the R555 and R37, and vehicles without valid operating licenses were impounded.

This was the second day in succession the mayor led the roadblocks.

“To ensure commuter safety, roadblocks will be conducted as and when required,” he said. ”Owners and drivers are urged to ensure that their vehicles have valid operating licenses at all times.”

Maila thanked those who cooperated with law enforcement officials, and impounded vehicles were swiftly released after payment of fines.

He emphasised that the operation benefits both operators, who must have valid permits, and passengers, whose safety is paramount.

The mayor also cautioned those who flout the law by blocking roads, despite not having valid operating permits.

He stressed that the municipality will not tolerate such acts, and that those responsible will face the full might of the law. He went on to say that the laws of the country must be respected at all times.
