More than 10 injured in Mbombela accident

Recovery operations on the R40 have been completed and the road is open to traffic.

More than ten people were injured in a three-vehicle accident on the R40 near Riverside in Mbombela today, September 16.

The accident involved a Buscor bus, a minibus taxi, and a black VW Polo hatchback.

The cause of the accident has not yet been confirmed. The Jaws of Life were used to extract the driver of the VW Polo and the front passenger of the minibus taxi.

Passengers in the bus and the taxi sustained minor and serious injuries and were transported to the nearest hospitals for medical attention. The Buscor driver escaped unharmed.

According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the taxi, which was travelling towards Mbombela, turned right at a red traffic light without stopping, colliding with the sedan before hitting the bus and coming to a stop.

The bus and sedan were travelling in the direction of White River.

The spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety and Security Liaison, Moeti Mmusi, confirmed that an investigation is under way to determine the cause of the accident. He urged motorists to drive with caution to avoid accidents.
