Zarafsha steals the spotlight at St Thomas’ annual awards ceremony
St Thomas college in Tubatse honours the remarkable achievements of a Grade 11 learner.
St Thomas College awarded trophies and certificates to hard-working learners during the school’s annual awards ceremony on November 1. The prestigious event took place in the school’s Mary Mathew Hall.

Attendees included the school management team as well as the board of directors, that was led by the chairman, KV Mathew. One of St Thomas’ founding members, NC “Godfather” Nchabeleng, also attended the event to offer a message of support.
Excelling learners from grades eight to 11 were awarded performance-based certificates and trophies.
The categories included the best learner in each subject per grade and the overall best learner in each grade.
The drum majorettes, school choir, top readers, prefects, public speakers as well as pupils who excelled during the annual St Thomas Science Expo were also among those honoured.

The big winner was Grade 11 learner, Zarafsha Abdul Aziz, who won the Mary Mathew Memorial Trophy. This award, which is sponsored by the chairperson, is handed to a top learner in maths, physical science, life sciences and agricultural science.
Apart from excelling in these four subjects, Zarafsha was also the best learner in English, Afrikaans, geography and life orientation. She also received the dux shield for being the top learner in all eight subjects in Grade 11.
Dance and choir performances by learners entertained the guests.
The school management thanked the sponsors who assisted in making the event a success and the parents for their consistent support.
According to Mathew, the school is celebrating 25 years of excellence.
“We have worked very hard to produce excellent results since the year 2000. We are grateful to the parents and local communities for their immense support,” he said.

“In recent years, St Thomas introduced a catch-up programme in mathematics and English for newly admitted Grade Eight pupils. The project is now bearing fruit. We offer extra classes for newly admitted learners free of charge. Some of the pupils who were honoured today are products of this programme.”
