Soli Deo Gloria, a care centre for the underprivileged, was hit hard during a recent deluge.
A storm wreaked havoc in Lydenburg on Monday, December 1, leaving several houses damaged, trees uprooted, and a care centre demolished.
Soli Deo Gloria, a centre that assists families in need of temporary shelter, food and other necessities, was hit the hardest when almost all of its temporary housing was demolished during the storm.
Gerda Venter, the centre’s managing director, contacted Steelburger/Lydenburg News shortly after the storm subsided and informed the paper of the devastation.
“The damage is extensive. Many of our vulnerable residents are now homeless. Their belongings are destroyed and everything is left soaked and broken. We are in urgent need of assistance with temporary and long-term housing,” she said.
“Our team worked together as one to save what we could and to ensure every resident had at least a dry place to sleep.”

Venter said that while the full extent of the damage could not immediately be assessed, it was already clear that the need was overwhelming. She added that two residents were treated for minor injuries.
The shelter urgently appeals for any help in the form of temporary shelters/Wendy houses, blankets and mattresses, dry food and warm meals, building materials, and financial support for emergency repairs.
“Our people are safe, but many are traumatised and left with nothing. Any contribution, big or small, will make a difference,” said Venter.
Soli Deo Gloria is a non-profit organisation and caters specifically to those in less fortunate situations.
