Waterval Boven tunnel crash claims one life

One fatality has been reported, while two passengers sustained injuries.

A multi-vehicle crash occurred at the Waterval Boven tunnel earlier this evening, February 19, after a truck reportedly failed to brake and collided with several stationary vehicles.

Vehicles involved in the crash include three trucks, a minibus taxi and a passenger bus.

According to information received from the scene, one fatality has been confirmed and two passengers sustained light to serious injuries.

TRAC N4 spokesperson Solange Soares confirmed the cause of the crash.

“A stationary truck travelling towards Mbombela had a mechanical breakdown, which led to a stop-and-go being implemented. The accident occurred when another truck, which allegedly had brake failure, struck multiple vehicles from behind.”

Emergency services and SAPS are on the scene and investigations are ongoing. The road remains closed until further notice.
