The Lowveld and Escarpment Fire Protection Association (Lefpa) deployed its Quick Reaction Force (QRF) team today as crews work to contain a spreading veld fire in White River.

According to Lefpa manager André Scheepers, the association’s QRF Lowveld team is actively managing the blaze as crews work to contain the fire.

“Conditions can change rapidly due to dry vegetation and shifting winds,” said Scheepers.

Teams remain on high alert

He said Lefpa has had its firefighting teams on high alert since mid-May, ahead of the official fire season, to ensure they are ready to respond to incidents.

Scheepers urged landowners and residents to avoid the affected area where possible, follow the instructions of emergency services and report any new fires immediately.

“Do not stop on roads to watch or photograph the fire, as this may hamper emergency response efforts. Also check the daily Fire Danger Index (FDI) before lighting any fire,” he said.
