Penryn tops in clash with Komatipoort
Teams from Komatipoort Academy and Lowveld High School took on Penryn College in friendly matches on Saturday of last week.
A big difference in the scoreline between the first teams of Penryn College and Komatipoort Akademie caused the match to be stopped 25 minutes early. The two clashed at Penryn on Saturday in very wet conditions.
Penryn ultimately beat Komatipoort by 43-3 after leading by 38-0 at half-time.
Penryn’s head of rugby, Graeme Stewart explained that the friendly matches were requested by Komatipoort, but as they only have two rugby teams (first XV and u/15), Lowveld High School (LHS) was invited to play the remaining Penryn teams (u/16 and u/14).
“It was evident from the start the Penryn’s larger forwards would be a factor on the day and they proved difficult to handle. Penryn’s fast interlinking play proved too much for Komatipoort,” Stewart said about the first-team match.
“We concentrated on the continuity of the ball between forwards and backs and we were happy with this part of our game. A concern for us is our defensive lines on second-phase ball.”
Hadrick Coertze crossed the line to score tries three times. Kwanda Majola,Ya Ya Ngutshane, Chris Symonds and Manqoba Sibanyoni each scored once, of which Kyle Hay converted four.
Stewart said the match was called off early at the request of Komatipoort’s coaches due to the high scoreline. “Credit must go to Komatipoort for competing and we wish them well for their season,” he concluded.
