Sehohle finishes strong in the TomTom Classic

Current South African 1 500-metre champion, Folavio Sehohle, competed in the TomTom Classic Shoot-out 1 000 metres at the University of Johannesburg on Saturday.

He was supposed to race against Jerry Motsau, who won the 2014 SA 1 500-metre title. Motsau didn’t show up for the race, but it would have been interesting.

Motsau boasts a 1 500-metre personal best of 03:36,74 and clocked a 1 000-metre at 02:23,88. In 2015 he was the bronze medalist at SA Champs in the 1 500 metres and in 2016 he claimed fourth place. His personal best in the 800 metres is 01:47,61.

Sehohle claimed the 2016, 1500 metre title after first going to test his strength on the road where he ran a 63:58 half-marathon personal best. His best over 1 500 metres is 03:39,41 which he ran when he came third at the SA Champs in the 1 500 metre in 2013. Sehohle can also run an 800 metre in 01:48,71.

2017 Van Wettens Night Race champion, Sehohle, secured a second place with a time of 02:23.

“The idea of us racing two races at the same time was a bad idea. The runners in line five to eight started 70 metres ahead of the runners in lane one to four. The inside runners were never really in the race, but it was a good start to the season and otherwise I have no complaints,” Sehohle said.

He will travel to Durban this week to participate in Athletics South Africa’s (ASA) speed series, league one. ASA recently unveiled the new elite track and field series.

“Anything from a sub-03:40 will be possible, and I am looking forward to trying my best. I still have two months to prepare for the nationals. If I can run my personal best on Tuesday, I will be happy.

This is the only opportunity to qualify for the IAAF World Championships later this year in London,” Sehohle concluded.

The rest of the series will be held in Durban (February 28), Bloemfontein (March 8), Potchefstroom (March 15) and Germiston (March 22).
