Sabie hosts tournament

More than 154 players gathered in Sabie over the weekend for the Sabie Open ABC Chess Tournament.

Hoërskool Rob Ferreira’s Julia Visser (18) was the chess queen in the A-section, winning five out of five games and securing her first place. In second, it was Samkelo Mndawe with one loss, followed by George Visser in third.

Thirteen-year-old Ayanda Mnisi, of Penryn College, topped the female category of the B-section. Komatipoort’s Bart Hector van Buynder (16) won all of his games to win the B-section overall.

The C-section had the most competitors with 56. Another pupil of Rob, Zelu Tesema, was victorious. Laerskool Lydenburg’s Milan Sephton took the honours in the D-section.

“Sabie, as always, is one of the highlights of the chess calendar, and we were not disappointed. With many of our regulars participating for their schools in various other sports, we still managed to attract 154 players. Thanks to Thato Mathebula and the staff of Sabie Primary for their willingness to host this tournament. It is a lot of hard work, and we really appreciate the effort,” said secretary of Ehlanzeni Chess, Karen Taljaard.

Don’t forget to register for the Curro Nelspruit Chess Tournament on May 6. They promise a chess tournament like no other.
