Players impress on and off the board

The crème de la crème of the Ehlanzeni Chess players gathered at Tshwane University of Technology Mbombela Campus for the annual De Goede Closed tournament last weekend.

The stakes were high, and the nerves were evident as this was the last shot at additional points to be elected for the South African Junior Chess Championships (SAJCC) taking place from December 15 to 24 at Birchwood Hotel & Conference Centre.

Mieke Pauer won the u/10 open division, followed by Jasbir Naidoo who did the best among the boys, taking second place.

In the u/12 boys category, Nico van der Merwe were the strongest boy, and Gugulethu Fankomo outsmarted the girls in the same age group.

Barend Pringle took first place in the boys u/14 division, and among the girls, Tanya Machiri reigned supreme.

In the u/16 combined boys and girls division, Eugene Lourens took the spoils among the boys and Suné du Preez scored the highest among the girls.

The u/18 division saw the boys dominate the first eight spots, with Charles Janson taking the spoils.
