Hoërskool Bergvlam girls cricket not stumped by the competition
The run rate from the winning side was fantastic and the spirit among the teammates was evidence that cooperation will get the desired results.
Hoërskool Bergvlam’s u/15 girls’ cricket team pitted themselves against a determined Penryn side last Wednesday. After winning the coin toss, Bergvlam sent Penryn in to bat and the match was on. The Vlammies took four wickets and limited Penryn to 115 runs in 20 overs.
Bella Davies from Bergvlam showed her mettle and took two wickets, while her teammates Taniel Leverington and Razeena Nomani contributed with one wicket each. Bergvlam scored their winning runs in 13 overs and knocked Penryn out by six wickets. Bergvlam’s wicket keeper, Jessica Els, scored 30 runs off 21 balls to add to the convincing win. The run rate from the winning side was fantastic and the spirit among the teammates was evidence that cooperation will get the desired results.

Chiné Maritz was a deserving player of the match after scoring 46 runs not out. All in all, an excellent day for cricket and a big thumbs up for the Bergvlam team, whose steady play led to a well-deserved victory over their counterparts. This latest victory follows another fantastic showing against Barberton the previous week.

The team edged the visitors out with a 360-run win against a side which braved the searing Lowveld heat to put on a spirited display. The thrilling cricket action served up to spectators proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the goalposts are being shifted as young women take on the challenge and show that they, too, have what it takes to contribute their talents and skills on exhibition in sport.
The young girls played with gusto and every run scored and wicket taken during the competition proves that Lowveld girls certainly possess the ability and the staying power to compete in sport. The heat did nothing to deter the players from cheering each other on to produce amazing results and scores.

This is attested to by the run rate which is indicative of the competitive nature of the matches being played. Parents, teachers and family members cheered loudly from the stands while the players bowled, batted and fielded with fierce intensity.

The players who stood out made an impression as they put in consistent performances in a nail-biting, thrilling cricket encounter between sporting rivals who entertained and astounded spectators as they served up an enjoyable day of cricket. The sport has long been dominated by men.
