Pumas fall to rampant Western Province at Mbombela Stadium

The home team were dismal in the second half

DHL Western Province ran in four tries to two tries and a penalty try to defeat the NNC Pumas 37-23 at Mbombela Stadium this afternoon.

After an evenly matched first half in the Carling Currie Cup match, the visitors came out snorting in the second. The Pumas were outclassed in the second 40 minutes.

The Pumas spent the early parts of the match defending well. Western Province had all the possession and ran everything at the home team.

Pieter Janse van Vuren was yellow carded in the eighth minute for a high tackle. Tim Swiel slotted the resulting penalty to give Province a 3-0 lead.

In the 20th minute Gerrie Labuschagne landed a 56-metre penalty to take the score to 3-3.

Minutes later Swiel put his team three points ahead.

Tristan Leyds scored Western Province’s first try. He collected a wayward high-up-and-under and sprinted unchallenged down the right touch line.

Swiel converted for a 13-3 lead, and then landed another penalty kick to give his team a 13-point lead.

Three minutes before half-time the Pumas were awarded a penalty try when Sazi Sandi reverted to an illegal tactic to prevent an attacking maul. The prop got a yellow card for the indiscretion.

The half-time score was 16-10 to the visitors.

The Pumas’ second half effort left much to be desired. They made poor decisions and unforced errors.

Neil Marais nailed a 41-metre penalty to narrow rthe gap to three points in 46th minute.

In the 52nd minute Province scrum half Paul de Wet scored after the Pumas defensive line went AWOL. Swiel added the two points.

Leyds scored his second eight minutes later after a perfect cross-kick from Swiel landed in his hands on the try line. Again Swiel converted.

Province eighthman Evan Roos then found a gap in the Pumas’ defence and scored under the posts. Swiel converted the try.

The Pumas’ Simon Westraad scored from an attacking maul on 70 minutes but Eddie Fouché, who had come on minutes earlier, missed the conversion.

Fouché scored a try after the siren when he slipped through the Province defence. Again he missed the conversion kick.

Province showed class and charecter in the victory. The Pumas were outplayed, particularly in the second half.

The home team were not up to par against a motivated Province team.
