OCR Nelspruit and CANSA join hands for the Ultimate Obstacle Race

The aim was to raise funds for CANSA, the race started at 08:00 with some of the athletes choosing the 10-kilometre course and others deciding on completing the five-kilometre one.

OCR Nelspruit Eagles joined hands with CANSA Mpumalanga and Body20 Studio for the Ultimate Obstacle Race, 10 kilometre and five kilometre at the Eagles View Play Park on Saturday November 27.

OCR Nelspruit Eagle’s Pieter Briel and Andrew Martin, who are both the organisers of the race and coaches at OCR Nelspruit, said the race was a loop on the grounds of the park, with 15 obstacles per five kilometre, meaning the participants competing in the 10-kilometre course had 30 obstacles to complete before finishing the race.

Lizandri van der Merwe was first for the ladies five-kilometre course and the runner-up was Danielle de Bruin.

With competitors ranging from as young as eight years old, it was a day not only for the athletes to show off their strength and endurance, but also a day of fun for family and supporters of the competitors.

Danielle de Bruin makes her way up the net.

From rope climbing, swinging from monkey bars, to wading through cold water and a 20-burpee penalty for those who could not complete the obstacles, it was a tough race that left all the participants red-faced and out of breath.

Reynard de Bruin and Justin Landsberg compete for first place on the last few obstacles of the race.

However, all the participants said they had fun and would definitely do the course again. The owner of Bodytwenty Sonpark, Enrica van der Merwe, sponsored the prize vouchers to the winners as well as water to the racers. Briel said the event was a success and they hope to have many more races next year.
