Rob speedsters sprint to glory

They won eight medals

Rob Ferreira High School’s athletes raked in the medals at the ASA National Relay Championships in Sasolburg recently.

The meet, which was originally scheduled to take place at the University of Mpumalanga, was hosted by Mpumalanga Athletics.

The Mpumalanga team consisted of 60 athletes.

It was the first time that the relays were hosted as a separate championship.

The meeting was a combined championship for juniors and seniors, as well as all heptathlon and decathlon athletes.

The school had the opportunity to see all the best senior athletes in action.

Ten athletes from Rob Ferreira High School were part of the Mpumalanga team and eight won medals.

In the u/18 mixed 4x400m relay, Siyabonga Masina and Kgotso Machete of Rob Ferreira teamed up with Mia Davel of Ermelo and Lika Olivier of HTS Middelburg.

It was probably the race of the meeting.

Kgotso started and handed the baton to Lika, who managed to get in front of the chasing pack.

She handed over to Siyabonga, who opened a decent lead on the rest and handed over to Mia for the final leg.

She was overtaken with about 150 metres to go, but fought back and outsprinted Boland (2nd) and Gauteng (3rd) to take gold for Mpumalanga.

The boys u/18 4x100m team consisted of four Robbie sprinters, Junior Mbedzi, Prosper Masinga, Thando Mokoena and Tlotlo Ratswene.

This was the first time in the school’s history that all four members of a Mpumalanga team came from Rob Ferreira.

They managed to win bronze in a highly contested race right up to the finish line. Gauteng won in 41.82s. Western Province were second in 42.02s and Mpumalanga third in 42.06s.

Other medal winners from Rob Ferreira were Sinenhlanhla Dhlamini in the boys u/16 medley relay, in which Mpumalanga won a bronze medal, and

Olwethu Bayisa, who won a bronze medal in the 4x400m medley relay for girls u/20.

Barberton High School’s Zanele Sehohle was Olwethu’s teammate.
