TS Galaxy retain place in DStv Premiership on last day of season
TS Galaxy will aim for a top-eight place next season.
TS Galaxy will play in the 2022/23 DStv Premiership.
The Mpumalanga club survived the threat of the relegation/promotion play-offs on the last day of league action on Saturday.
They beat Chippa United 1-0 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium to finish 13th on the log with 30 points.
Given Msimango scored one minute into stoppage time to secure The Rockets’ place in the Premiership.
All games kicked off at 15:00 on Saturday and TS Galaxy’s future depended on the Swallows-versus-Kaizer Chiefs result.
Their fortunes had changed in the 30 minutes preceding the Msimango goal.
Swallows were leading Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 and with TS Galaxy and Chippa locked at 0-0, Galaxy would finish in the dreaded 15th place.
Then Chiefs scored from a free kick, pushing Swallows down to 15th.
A goal in either match could again change the final log placings.
Msimango scored that goal and as long as TS Galaxy kept the lead, the result between Swallows and Chiefs was now irrelevant.
The final whistles in both matches blew within a minute of each other, and the TS Galaxy players and support staff celebrated on the Nelson
Mandela Bay pitch. The Rockets were safe.
It was a poor season for TS Galaxy.
They played 30, won seven, drew nine and lost 14 matches.
The Rockets won just four of their 15 home matches, a dismal record.
One stat sums up TS Galaxy’s season. They scored 22 goals in their DStv Premiership campaign. The same number, 22, was scored by Peter Shalulile of champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Rockets simply did not have the firepower up front.
Wayde Lekay was their top goalscorer for the Premiership, with four.
TS Galaxy conceded 38 goals in 30 games. Only ninth-placed Golden Arrows (39) and relegated Baroka (40) conceded more.
The Rockets conceded two or more goals in a match on 10 occasions.
After the first six matches of the campaign, Galaxy had only two log points. Their record read: drawn two, lost four.
Coach Owen Da Gama was dismissed. In came Serb, Sead Ramovic, who, although well qualified, had no track record to
speak of.
Ramovic’s record from October 19, his first match in charge, to Saturday read: won seven, drawn seven, lost nine.
“When I took over, the team had no structure, no tactical knowledge. We showed the guys what’s important. The spirit, the fight they showed was unbelievable. I don’t believe many teams would have come back after picking up two points after eight games. It was almost impossible to stay in the league, but we kept going. In the end, dedication and hard work brought us success. I am happy that we are safe, and it’s a beautiful thing,” said the jubilant Ramovic.
“I will start to prepare for the new season. I can promise that TS Galaxy from now will be at the top and no longer down. Our goal is to be in the top eight so we have to prepare ourselves. We are preparing for the new season,” promised Ramovic.
The Rockets will continue to utilise Mbombela Stadium as their home ground next season.
