Pumas and Griquas name match 23s as both teams chase Currie Cup semi-final place
The Pumas last qualified for the semis in 1980.
The Windhoek Draught Griquas, the Airlink Pumas and the Cell C Sharks will will take to the fields on Friday night,
with the three teams all in contention for the two remaining Carling Currie Cup semi-final places.
The Griquas are third on the log (31 points), the Pumas fourth (27) and the Sharks fifth (26).
The Pumas will be on a mission to qualify for the semis for only the second time in their history and the first time
since 1980.
Shortly before the kick-off at 18:00, of the Pumas match against the Griquas on Friday, the Pumas will know exactly what their round 12 match scenario will be. The Sharks play away to DHL Western Province at the Danie Craven Stadium on the same day. Kick-off is at 16:00. The final whistle should be blown moments before the Mbombela Stadium match.
Should the Sharks lose and not score more than one bonus log point, the Pumas and Griquas will be in the semi-finals and the match at Mbombela Stadium will decide which team finish third and fourth.
If the Sharks lose and earn two bonus points, they will move to 28 log points and fourth place. The Pumas will then have to score at least one bonus point in a loss, or beat the Griquas to qualify for the semis.
If the Sharks win, they will move to 30 or 31 log points and overtake the Pumas in fourth place on the log. Then only a win over the Griquas, with or without a bonus point, will earn the Pumas a semi-final spot.
Any scenario in which the Sharks and Pumas finish on an equal number of log points should give the Mpumalanga team the semi-final, because, going into the last round, the Pumas points for/against difference is +42 and the Sharks’ is -22.
The Griquas’ permutation is simple. They need one log point to make the semis.
The Griquas beat the Pumas 41-20 at Windhoek Draught Park on February 2.
Tickets for the match are on sale at Computicket outlets and at the stadium’s ticket office. Pumas and Griquas fans are encouraged to buy their tickets early. At the Pumas’ previous home match, there were long queues at the stadium’s ticket office shortly before kick-off.
