Padel, the new kid on the block
A new racquet sport has taken the Lowveld by storm. Padel can be played at White River Country Club and the Lowveld Country Club.
In 2023, a new ‘kid’ on the block was introduced.
Left, right and centre, all over the world, people are playing a new racquet sport called padel ball.
Synthetic courts, surrounded with glass walls and mesh fencing, have been popping up everywhere, with hundreds of thousands taking an interest in the game.
At first, padel might have seemed like a foreign concept to most Lowvelders, but with padel ball courts at the White River Country Club and now also at the Lowveld Country Club (LVCC), this game has come to be known and enjoyed by many.
Padel ball is based on the same playing concept as tennis, but is played on a court half the size. Some may even compare it to squash, as the walls surrounding the playing surface act as ‘players’ too and the ball is allowed to bounce off them, adding to the fun, and for some, the confusion.

The point scoring system works the same as that of tennis and it’s usually played in three sets.
If you are a tennis player yourself, padel ball might be right up your alley – or not. The size of the court forces strong tennis players to opt for loopy passes and the smaller racquet asks for more concentration when hitting the ball.
Padel is a relatively simple but exciting game that challenges your aerobic capacity and allows you to enjoy yourself while still staying active.
Whether you play with your friends or make new ones, padel is a sport that brings people together!
