TS Galaxy falls to Stellenbosch at Mbombela Stadium

TS Galaxy’s hopes of making the top four in the DStv Premiership were dashed when they were beaten 2-1 by Stellenbosch at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday April 21.

Ahead of their clash with the second-placed Stellenbosch, The Rockets were in search of a rebound victory after they had been dumped out of the Nedbank Cup in the quarter-finals by Chippa United a week prior.

But in order to do so, they would have to overcome a soaring Stellenbosch side that had not lost a game since their 3-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in September 2023. This is an incredible run of 23 games unbeaten in all competitions. The men from the Western Cape also hold the second-best away record in the league, behind Sundowns only.

This left TS Galaxy with a mammoth mountain to climb if they were to return to their winning ways on Sunday April 21. Nonetheless, they held their own in the encounter, taking the lead in the first half through a goal from Lehlogonolo Mojela in the 41st minute, right on the stroke of half-time.

The lead didn’t last much longer once play resumed in the second half, as Stellenbosch equalised through Fawaaz Basadien after 53 minutes. An André de Jong goal in the 61st minute was the deciding factor in the encounter, though, as Stellenbosch ran out the victors with 2-1.

This leaves TS Galaxy in sixth place on the log, one point below SuperSport United in fifth, with two games in hand. Already in the midst of their best season in the DStv Premiership, The Rockets are now five points off the top four, which is their aim to ensure they qualify for the CAF Confederations Cup for the first time in five years.

Their next challenge lies in the form of a struggling Moroka Swallows side that is six points above the relegation zone. This presents TS Galaxy with the perfect chance to bounce back and get their season going once again. The match will be played at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Friday April 26, kicking off at 19:30.
