Mbombelan seals second European Masters title in style

Lawrence’s previous European Masters win came in 2022.

Thriston Lawrence, who grew up in Mbombela, claimed the second Omega European Masters title of his career on Sunday, August 31, with a tight two-shot triumph.

Lawrence went into the final round on Sunday with a one-shot lead over fellow former winner Matt Wallace. The final round, however, got off to a nightmare start for him after he shot three straight bogeys to concede his lead and subsequently fall two shots behind.

Forced to chase the two former champions who had been trailing him, 28-year-old Lawrence had no choice but to rise to the challenge and bravely took on the par-four sixth. His tactics paid off as he was rewarded with an eagle on the sixth before firing five birdies in his next eight holes to open up a three-shot lead.

His heart would have likely skipped a beat when, on the 15th hole, his approach shot flew towards the penalty area but he managed to save par from there.

Lawrence then safely parred his way over the line to finish on 22-under-par and clinch his fifth DP World Tour title as well as a second at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club following his 2022 Omega European Masters triumph.
