No mountain is too high for rock climber

Lowveld climber, Nikki Reinhardt, won gold and bronze at the recent South African National Climbing Federation (SANCF) Championships in Johannesburg.

Reinhardt claimed the bronze medal in the lead finals and a first place in the boulder finals.

The 22-year-old is a past junior high-jump champion which, besides hard work and commitment, she believes gives her the competitive edge to compete successfully.

This was her second attempt at a South African championships. Last year she placed seventh.

“I was super nervous as I didn’t really know what to expect. But the more I climbed, the stronger I got,” said Reinhardt.

“I only started climbing about two and a half years ago. A friend of mine, Barry (Britz) practised the sport when he was younger. He heard about a climbing wall in Rocky Drift and I tagged along. I gave it a shot and I loved it,” said Reinhardt.

Mpumalanga Climbing president, Britz, together with George Stainton, former SANCF president, have built a boulder facility at Mbombela Stadium, with an eye to build speed and lead walls to successfully host the nationals in the city in the future.

The competition boulder wall at City Rock Johannesburg where Reinhardt won gold, has a similar design to what is being planned at the stadium.
