Wheelchair tennis introduced to the Lowveld

More clinics will be held next year.

Tennis for persons with disabilities in the Lowveld is ready to serve an ace.

A clinic to introduce the sport to wheelchair-bound players with potentialwas held at Nelspruit Tennis Club on Friday.

“We took the initiative as Mpumalanga Tennis to introduce the game to local people living with disabilities. We brought Alwande Sikhosana, the number one ranked player in Africa, and Evans Maripa, the number two ranked player in Africa, to Mbombela to play a short exhibition match and execute the clinic.

“But it’s not just about this day. We want to get wheelchair tennis going in the province and have big plans for the near future,” said Sabelo Mathebula of Mpumalanga Tennis.

The two professional players showed remarkable skills in their exhibition match and the attendees also had a chance to learn from them and hit a few balls.

According to Mathebula, Mpumalanga Tennis will be introducing wheelchair tennis to various communities in Ehlanzeni from early next year.
