Ehlanzeni netball team wins gold at SPAR women’s national championships in Johannesburg

Ehlanzeni defeated King Cetshwayo in the B2 section final.

The Ehlanzeni netball team are the senior B2 section South African champions.

This team won the title at the SPAR Women’s National Netball Championships held at Ellis Park Netball in Johannesburg from December 1 to 7.

Ehlanzeni got off to a flying start, defeating Amathole 58-23 in the opening round on Monday, December 2. The next day, they faced OR Tambo. The Ehlanzeni girls were not at their best and OR Tambo won 46-16. Wednesday saw Ehlanzeni up against Ilembe. The Mpumalanga-based team were in a class of their own, winning 63-24.

On Thursday, Ehlanzeni scored a 49-36 win against Royal Bafokeng. This result saw them top the B2 log and qualify for the semi-finals on Friday. Ehlanzeni scored a convincing 47-29 win over West Rand A to book a place in the final. King Cetshwayo defeated OR Tambo 40-33 in the other semi-final.

The final on the Saturday was a thriller as Ehlanzeni was made to fight hard for a 45-37 victory against King Cetshwayo. The Ehlanzeni team’s Maritske Rautenbach was selected for the national NSA Development Squad after the tournament.

The Ehlanzeni U21 team finished ninth out of the 14 teams in the U21 B2 section.
