Clements tames Mbombela course in second round to win Lowveld Mid-Am

After shooting a 74 on Saturday, the Country Club Johannesburg golfer signed for a 70 on Sunday.

Gareth Clements of Country Club Johannesburg shot a superb one-under-par 70 on Sunday to win the Lowveld Mid-Amateur Open at Mbombela Golf Club.

The tournament was played over 36 holes on Saturday and Sunday, July 19 and 20.

Clements had a share of fourth place after the first round, shooting a 74.

Lindile Nojontsholo of Kyalami Country Club was the leader after 18 holes, shooting a level-par 71. Janneman Combrink (Malelane Golf Club), Jaco Meyer (Blue Valley Golf Estate) and Clive Palm (Glendower Golf Club) were tied for second place on +1. Eddie Wilken (Malelane) and Henk Klopper (Akasia Country Club) were in third on +2, and JP Prinsloo (Kambaku Golf Club), Stephan Potgieter (Mbombela Golf Club), Ruan van Blerk (Mbombela) and Christoffel Esterhuizen (Mbombela) were with Clements in tied fourth place.

Nojontsholo’s second round was a disaster. He shot a 15-over-par 86 to finish the tournament on 157 (+15), and tied in 21st place.

Clements climbed steadily up the leader board on Sunday. His championship-winning second round consisted of three birdies, four bogeys and 11 pars.

Derek Scullard (Glenvista Country Club), who was in tied fifth after the first round on 75, also shot 70 on Sunday to earn second place on 145 (+3).

Palm dropped down to eventually finish fourth, with Sunday’s 75 taking him to 147 (+5). Nicolaas Webber (Magalies Country Club), David Ryan (Royal Johannesburg) and Klopper tied for fifth on 148 (+6). Ryan’s 69 on Sunday was the lowest round of the tournament.

The top ten was rounded off with Jurgens Moolman (Bronkhorstspruit Golf Club) and Prinsloo tied for eighth on 150 (+8), and Stewart Chitambo (Royal Oak Country Club) and Ryno van Niekerk (Woodhill Country Club) tied for tenth on 150 (+8).
