Youngsters enjoy festive hockey fun

The Curro Mini Hockey Festival on July 30 was all about "enjoyment, participation and the development of hockey in the Lowveld," said teacher Anke Voges.

“We do not keep score at these festivals but rather focus on giving everyone who is willing to play the opportunity to do so.”

Boys and girls from seven Lowveld schools participated in the tournament in the u/7, u/8 and u/9 age groups. Some of the teams were mixed, depending on the number of players available. The AstroTurf was divided into four mini-hockey fields.

Head of Curro Nelspruit, George van Rensburg, said the school was thrilled to provide the chance for some of the children to play on an AstroTurf for the first time.

“This is a special day for the kids and the parents. For some of these players, it’s their first hockey match,” he said.

The school encouraged grade seven hockey players to act as umpires to allow them to learn how to officiate.

They were assisted on the field by the coaches.

The primary schools which participated in the mini-tournament were Curro, Uplands, Numbi, Laeveld, Witrivier, Penryn and Lydenburg.
