A dream come true for local rugby player

Hoërskool Rob Ferreira's Byron Venter (19) signed a three-year contract with the Sharks Academy.

The centre will complete a sport, recreational and fitness management course through ETA College.

Byron also applied at the WP Rugby Academy, but as he logged into his email account, he saw the acceptance letter from the Sharks.

“I dropped my phone and was speechless for a moment. I want to complete my course successfully and hope to play alongside Patrick Lambie and Beast Mtawarira.”

He started playing rugby for the love of the game, but on his 13th birthday he had the privilege to meet the 2010 Currie Cup team captained by John Smit.

“I had a one-on-one conversation with John and from there on I was influenced on making the Sharks team. I made it my ultimate goal that I hope to achieve.”

Byron will join College Rovers Rugby Club. His mom, Vivian could not be more proud.

“I just heard ‘Mom!’ and I knew he got accepted at the Sharks. It has been his dream since his 13th birthday and I wish him all the best of luck. I cannot wait to see my son in the white and black jersey,” she said.
