Mamphele Ramphele is an honest person
MJ Matemane of Praktiseer writes:
What Dr Mamphele Ramphele has done by declaring her financial status is beyond reproach. In fact that is what mature and honest politicians, in a democracy, do.
To quote two examples, In the US and in Britain, you cannot stand for a high political position without first declaring what you are worth. They subject you to a thorough and rigorous scrutiny.
Among others they want to know the source of your money and how you have amassed your riches. If you are poor or there is a snake in the grass, you will not be nominated for any political position, for fear that you will in turn swindle the state out of millions of rands.
Once more we salute Dr Mamphele Ramphele for being exemplary in this bold move. I wonder how many African leaders can do that.
If South African political leaders have honestly earned what they have, they must not prevaricate, but follow suit.
The first person to set an example should be President Jacob Zuma himself, followed by his deputy, namely Kgalema Motlanthe, as well as Cyril Ramaphosa. Then all the ministers and their deputies must follow the music.
The ministers will be followed by the premiers and their cabinet ministers. We want honest transparent and credible leaders.
Some sceptics regard Mamphele as a Skothane and that she is boastful of what she has accumulated. Far from that, what she has done is to prove to us that she has nothing to hide, for what she has earned honestly.
Secondly, she is challenging the present government leaders to follow suit. What she has done is the foundation of transparency and accountability, which is lacking or absent in the present crop of leadership. Bravo, Mamphele!
