From heartache over the death of a leader to big hearts in assisting the SPCA in its plight - the Lowveld showed its best side this month.

• December 3: The businessmen of the Lowveld managed to raise R8 000 in less than three hours in order to save the animals of the Lowveld SPCA. This followed after reports that the non-profit organisation may close its doors due to financial issues such as Mbombela Municipality had not paid the SPCA for acting as the official animal pound for the region.

• December 6: The owners, Bakos Brothers are facing criminal investigation for performing construction work without the necessary permission and harming a wetland in the process. This follows after the construction at Aloe Park on the corner of Madiba Drive and Anderson Street earlier this year due to new parking decks. According to Mr Mohau Ramodibe, communications head of the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism the construction was done on the wetland and that a stream was diverted.

• December 10: Nelson Mandela’s death saw a series of memorials announced in the run-up to his funeral. He died at the age of 95 at his house in Houghton, Johannesburg, Thursday night.
