The lives of chimp Nina and her baby, Thabu, were still being closely followed by local and internationaly fans. On a more serious note, February saw the death by drowning of a young boy in Sabie during a tubing excursion with friends. The large-scale destruction of the road from Plaston to White River leads to a spontaneous road closure by residents.

• Rescue workers were shocked when they saw the magnitude of the flood disaster in Mozambique, where thousands were left homeless and many lives lost.
• February 5: Jealous man attacks ex girlfriend in a bizarre way, when he injected her with his own blood. He could be arrested for attempted murder if he is HIV positive.
• February 8: Two crooks allegedly cloning cards were caught red-handed at an ATM in Steiltes. Following the vigilance of Hi-Tech security Nelspruit, and extreme caution, the men were caught in the act and arrested on the scene.
• February 12: Boy drowned in the Klein Sabie River after tubing with his friends. Family and residents were shocked and are attributing his untimely death to the water crisis that haunted Simile for two weeks.
• February 15: Many shocking revelations were made during the Department of Health’s Standing Committee and Public Accounts (Scopa) hearing on during this time, and the HOD, Mr Richard Mnisi, had to have his wits about him to answer questions from the hearing’s members. He faced negligence claims of R217 million, the department also had to deal with the over-and underpayment of staff.
• February 19: Black Friday, the day that women across the country were urged to wear black to unite against rape and women abuse. This followed after a woman (23), was hit over the head, dragged into her home and raped. She waited at Mediclinic, for help that did not come.
• February 22: The call had come for premier Mr David Mabuza, to do everything in his power to assist 138 medical students from South Africa who are allegedly being detained in and refused food in Cuba.
• Readers and followers of Nina, the Chimpanzee, had the choice of voting for the best name for Nina’s new-born.
• February 26: Trucks destroy alternate route in White River, after destroying the initial route. An investigation was started after numerous complaints were received about truck drivers driving irresponsibly. Residents spontaneously close the road to all traffic.
